What to Ask for When You Visit the Barbershop

What to Ask for When You Visit the Barbershop

It’s that time again when you need a haircut, and you look like you’ve been dragged through a hedge backwards. Your beard (if you can grow one yet) looks like something outta that Tom Hanks movie, and you’ve even started talking to a Sherrin footy with a face painted on it. What a crazy sight.

Then, you’ll make your way downtown to the same shop you’ve always been going to. Sadly, it’s a place where the barber cares more about the way they look and not getting hair on their $300 t-shirt than you leaving the shop with anything resembling a haircut that’ll grow out well.
So, you’ve finally sat down, and they’ve asked you what you want… then panic ensues — you don’t know WTF to ask for!

You might mutter out a small, “Oh, just a haircut.” Then, the service starts, it finishes, and you’re still not happy. Why would you know what’s going to look good? You do graphic design for the government. You know you wanted it shorter on the sides, so why didn’t you say that?

Well, let’s get into what you can do to make your visit to the barbershop worth it — and why you should visit Buddy’s Barbershop for your next cut.

Communicating What You Don’t Like About Your Current Haircut

What’s annoying you about your current hair?

Is it the fuzz at the back? Damn, that stuff grows back fast! Then let’s taper it; having that tightness around the bottom edges can really help with that.

That goes for the sides, too. You know where your beard doesn’t quite meet your hair? Don’t worry about it; our Melbourne barbershop can gradually blend out of that.

Or maybe it’s the fact you feel like every time you’re a week outta the chair, everything’s falling down from the top and sitting over the sides. Not a problem — they’ve just really misjudged blending the top to the sides.

Maybe you just don’t like the style and want to switch it up. Whatever it is, be honest with your barber. He’s there to make you look good, not judge you.

Communicating What You Want Your Hair to Look Like

Once you’ve figured out what you don’t like about your current haircut, it’s time to figure out what you want your hair to look like.

“Hey, I really like the way the top curls but not through the sides.” Then boom — let’s go with that! We can leave that length through the top to make sure you’re NOT looking like Annie, but there are still a few crust-eaten curls going on.

“I like it when the sides don’t grow out too fast.” Then let’s rip those MF’s off! We can take it to the skin. Too short? Okay, let’s go to like a 1 or a 2 on the sides. Short doesn’t always mean a skin fade.

“I like it when it protects my neck from sunburn.” MULLET.

So, do you want a classic cut that’ll make you look like a badass from the 50s? Or do you want something more modern and trendy? Do you want it buzzed off like a military man? Or do you want it just a little bit shorter than what you’ve got now?

Be specific, and don’t be afraid to show your barber a picture of what you’re going for. That way, he won’t end up cutting your hair like a fool.

Don’t Be Afraid to Communicate with Your Barber!

All of these things, in most cases, can be solved quite easily with just a bit of communication.

Just like your couples therapist has been telling you, communication is key! Here at Buddy’s Barbershop, we’ll ask what you like or don’t. Tell us what you’re into and what you’re not. We can usually do something to make sure it grows out well for you.
