How Often Do You Need a Haircut: What You Need to Know

As barbers one of the most regular questions we get at Buddys Barbershop In Melbourne is “How often do I need to get a haircut?”

The answer to this question and life’s greatest questions all depends on a variety of factors, including the type of hairstyle you have, the condition of your hair, your personal preferences and of course how close to the sun the great pyramid of Giza is! In this article, we’ll cover all the key points you need to know when it comes to how often you should be getting a haircut with us here at Buddys

What Factors Affect How Often You Get a Haircut?

First and foremost, the type of hairstyle you have will play a major if not the largest role in determining how often you need a haircut. If you have short hair, likely you’ll need to be in a bit more often to keep it looking sharp, ESPECIALLY those skin fades.
We always say,

  • 2 weeks- Nothing changes
  • 3 weeks- bit fluffy round the edges
  • 4 weeks- things are going awry
  • 5 to 6 weeks- alright, who dragged you through that hedge?
  • 7 to 8 weeks- FROM WHAT HELL DID YOU CRAWL?
  • 9 to 12 weeks- We should be charging you double 😉

This is because short hair tends to grow out faster than longer styles.

On the other hand, if you have long hair, you may be able to get away with a trim every eight to twelve weeks especially if that mullet is graciously keeping that hot Australian sun from burning the back of your neck.

God bless that redneck waterfall.

Next up, THE CONDITION!!!! If it’s totally fried from you and your mates bleaching it one sunny afternoon on the party juice, you’re going to find it will need a good trim. Simultaneously, sometimes that fried fuzz can leave you with some really great texture when styled right, so really it’s worth having a chat with your barber and seeing if that’s going to work with your style.

Finally, And this is the big one, HOW DO YOU LIKE TO WEAR IT?

If your barber is doing their job right, some consideration should be taken to how it will grow out, Banging the sides off all the way up and leaving it long as on the top is NOT going to grow out well, so explain to your scissor swinger how often you WANT to be in the chair, and maybe, just maybe you’ll get close to the most out of your service.

What Signs Indicate That Your Hair Looks Crap and It’s Time to Change That?

How your head is telling you “it’s time to go back to see your barber!”

1. That “fuzzy” S%*T on the back of your neck: Yeah, you know the stuff, crawling around your neck from the back to the front like a scene from some 80s B grade horror movie where, it’s always the weird old man that did it! Let your neckline do the talking, when it gets long, get in the shop. Don’t try and do it yourself, you’re only going to end up with chunks missing.

2. Having to use more product than Vince Colosimo at a 2017 awards night: Even the best products cannot cater to every length of hair all at once, all the time. Yes, buying the right ones is important but without the supporting cast (a well timed haircut) you’re dead in the water there champ!

3. Tangled (not the movie): If your hair is prone to tangles and knots, it could be a sign that it’s time for a trim. Dreadlocks are a red-flag, both for you and those around you.

4. Outdated Style: If you’ve been sporting the same style for months or years, it could be time to switch it up. It’ll change up the way you appear and probably the way you feel, sometimes that boost is all you need to mentally feel better.

Conclusion

Short answer, Once a month unless you’re growing it out, in which case once every 2 months. Long answer, have a conversation with your barber, what do you want? Will that work with the style? Should you just shave it all off and start again?

Don’t leave it too long, even if you’re growing it, we’d hate ya to grow all that length you’ve always wanted (& some of us always needed) to find out it’s completely screwed and there’s more dreadlocks than a Nu-metal show in the early 00’s.
